POSITION SUMMARY: The Recycling Center Maintenance Mechanic – A performs repairs and maintenance on recycling equipment, compact heavy equipment, and rolling stock to maximize safe and productive operations. Typical repairs include, but are not limited to, routine maintenance and repair of hydraulic systems, recycling equipment (sorting screens, optical sorters, magnets, eddy currents, etc.), electrical systems, balers, conveyor systems, and compactors.


  • Diagnose mechanical problems using charts, diagnostic software, technical manuals and expertise

  • Communicate directly with vendors and/or manufacturers for maintenance support.

  • Perform repairs and maintenance on recycling equipment to maximize safe and productive operations.

  • Perform minor to moderate repairs on rolling stock.

  • Repair or replace machine components as needed.

  • Complete maintenance reports as directed by the work order system.

  • Communicate with supervisor and/or equipment operators for clarification of equipment issues. May discuss preventive techniques with equipment users to minimize future issues.

  • Independently troubleshoot and maintain complex electromechanical equipment/systems.

  • Analyze reports associated with repairing equipment, documenting parts usage, and accounting for applied times (work order times vs. time card times).

  • May perform minor building maintenance.

  • Follow all safety policies and procedures.

  • Perform other job-related duties as determined or assigned.


  • High school diploma or G.E.D. is preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working independently as a class “A” mechanic maintaining equipment in a mechanical or industrial environment.

  • Must have working knowledge of hydraulics.

  • Must have working knowledge of electrical controls and 3-phase power.

  • Certification in mechanical or trade school, PLC programming and/or electronic diagnostics is a plus.

  • Must be able to operate various industrial fixed and mobile equipment.


  • Welding experience is required.
