The primary responsibilities of the Senior Manager, Sustainability are to manage sustainability projects, as well as, own the internal and external reporting of Republic Services’ Blue Planet TM sustainability initiative. Working closely in support of department leadership and with Operations, Information Technology, and other cross-functional stakeholders, the Senior Manager, Sustainability supports significant portions of Republic Services’ Sustainability strategy. The Manager, Sustainability supports the sustainability organization by leveraging their reporting knowledge and cross-functional leadership skills to support the definition and implementation of Republic’s environmental, social and governance goals.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Leverages system thinking, and environmental/sustainability business industry knowledge to address key/material environmental, social and governance issues.
Leads groups of internal and external resources across all phases of project delivery including planning, requirements, development, and implementation to drive measurable progress.
Project Execution – may include any or all of the following:
Manages and maintains expertise on DJSI, CDP, MSCI and other annual responses. Drives, tracks and measures sustainability reporting initiatives and identifies gaps via benchmarking.
Monitors and benchmarks reporting trends and changes to reporting standards to provide insights and recommendations on advancing Republic’s external reporting practices.
Oversees annual sustainability report, working with marketing, communications, engineering, finance and other key functions.
Leads environmental management system (EMS) and ISO certification efforts.
Drives internal communications/training programs.
Manages stakeholder engagement efforts.
Liaises with procurement to support identification, assessment and management of sustainability risks and opportunities in the supply chain.
Provides sales and RFP support, identifies and prioritizes stakeholder questionnaires and surveys. Contributes to the development and review of responses to surveys from investors, suppliers, etc.
Manages all sustainability driven disclosures, ensuring governance and controls of data.
Initiates, plans, executes and manages sustainability projects and related goals/metrics (pilot projects, energy/water efficiency, employee programs, etc).
Develops sustainability dashboard look and feel to facilitate company-wide understanding and access to sustainability performance.
Drives for continuous improvement in sustainability program.
Travels up to 10% of the time.
Performs other job duties as assigned or apparent.

Bachelor's degree or High School Diploma/GED and five years of work experience in environmental engineering, sustainability or related field. (required).
Minimum of 5 years of experience in project management and execution – a major plus if sustainability related projects. (required).
Experience with and knowledge of CDP, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI G4), Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), and sustainability/CSR reporting methods in general. (required).
Familiar with concepts of sustainability disclosure, including materiality, legal implications, and governance. (required).
Minimum of 2 years of experience in waste or transportation industry.
Demonstrated experience organizing and leading a diverse group of contributors and stakeholders to achieve objectives.
Written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to confidently facilitate working sessions with key stakeholders at all levels.
Results orientation and good time management skills with an ability to understand key milestones, goals, and objectives while leading groups of internal and external resources to meet project goals.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to adjust and adapt to changing conditions.
Ability to translate sustainability issues into goals and metrics and garner excitement and generate interest in program amongst field stakeholders.
Ability to grasp concepts quickly and exercise follow through skills, adhere to a work schedule and address challenges as they arise, maintaining a positive outlook.
