Job Description

The Staff Engineer is a hands-on technical leadership role responsible for designing, building and maintaining complex enterprise scale platforms and architectures. The position is responsible for non-managerial leadership of an Information Technology technical team by instructing, coordinating, directing, and reviewing the technical work of other team members. The Staff Engineer develops and promotes standard operating procedures and policies for the operating platforms in their area of responsibility.

The position is also responsible for ensuring Enterprise Architecture principles, standards, and high-level (conceptual, logical, physical) architectural approaches are adhered to by implementation teams. In addition, it leads continuous improvements to the team’s software development and/or operational processes.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Provides technical direction related to project deliverables for both onshore and off­shore development team members.

  • Reviews business requirements and technical analysis documentation to develop system implementation approaches designed to meet business objectives, while also consulting with Solution/Enterprise Architects.

  • Maintains and utilizes expert knowledge of, and provides system support for, at least two or more complex technical operating environments.

  • Works with Development team leads to ensure quality code is promoted to production.

  • Contributes to project deliverables by performing system administration and/or software development tasks as needed.

  • Provides input and feedback to team management for developers, administrators and analysts performance reviews and other hiring/promotion decisions.

  • Provides Tier 3 support and resolution of open IT issues escalated by IT Customer Support.

  • Reviews application performance and data platform metrics and consults with the development teams on enhancement opportunities.

  • Oversees the architecture, setup, configuration, testing, and debugging of one or more complex software using tools such as Microsoft BI stack, Qlik, IBM Cognos, Informatica Suite of products, MSSQL Server, Oracle, NoSQL, and Denodo.

  • Leads the technical design and documentation of Republic Services’ Enterprise Data platform including, but not limited to, data modeling, data security, data virtualization, platform integration, data resiliency and recoverability, and business continuity / disaster recovery.

  • Performs other job related duties as assigned or apparent.

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, and/or 12 years of related experience (Required).

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in designing, developing, planning and executing Enterprise Data technology solutions, tools, operations and support. (Required)

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in more than one of the following: (Required)

  • Design and development of multiple database systems such as SQL Server, Oracle, and NoSQL.

  • Performance tuning, optimizing query execution plans, stored procedures, SQL, Data Warehousing and DBMS internals.

  • Data transformation, and data movement using tools such as Informatica PowerCenter, Informatica Data Quality, and other informatica suite of tools.

  • Complex data profiling, data quality analysis to ensure all data possibilities including managing data anomalies.

  • Design and development using data analytics tools such as Microsoft BI Stack, Qlik, IBM Cognos, and SAS.

  • Experience in mentoring and educating technical and non-technical business users and peers regarding Enterprise Data development methodologies, best practices, and tools.

  • Experience with scripting tools such as Batch, PowerShell to automate common functions.

  • Knowledge of Cloud architectures (AWS/Azure), Big Data, Enterprise Application Integration, Qlik, Data Virtualization, NoSql, and other emerging technologies.

  • Demonstrates accountability, sound decision making, analytical thoroughness, and clear and concise communications.
