The Vice President will oversee all strategic sourcing and category management teams, procurement operations, and procurement services support (systems, processes, procedures, contracts, analytics, compliance), as well as supplier quantity reductions, quality improvements and strategic relationship development, supporting Republic’s $3 billion in “addressable” annual spend. The Vice President’s mandate will be to leverage Republic’s procurement spend nationally to maximize savings, establish a standardized set of best-in-class policies, processes, procedures and standards, implement world-class sourcing tools and systems, and develop a robust strategic supplier relationship/partnership program. S/he will develop sourcing strategies and procurement processes that enable Republic to accelerate profitable growth while driving efficiency, reducing spend, improving stakeholder buy-in and enabling overall value creation and overall total cost of ownership. The Vice President will work with category leaders to define national, area and business unit level/local category sourcing strategies and then determine how best to implement and track performance against these strategies (metrics). In addition, the Vice President will work with the category leaders to manage stakeholder relationships and achieve buy-in for the sourcing strategies and business case for change. Establishing and managing strong partnerships with suppliers to deliver continuous improvement savings will also be critical.


  • Responsible for setting sourcing strategies for approximately $3 billion+ in addressable spend and lead the development of annual strategic sourcing plans, execution of those plans and achievement of maximized savings within each category.

  • Lead a team of 7 direct reports

  • Implement the Procurement 2.0 re-organization plan and achieve $70 Million in savings tied to identified opportunities.

  • Focus on the $1 Billion of field managed (Unmanaged from procurement perspective) high vendor count, lower dollars per transaction spend to drive maximum benefit for the Company.

  • Establish and develop collaborative relationship with EVPs, Operations, Area Presidents, General Managers as critical stakeholders to the success of the department. Work in conjunction with operations leadership to drive maximum benefit for the Company.

  • Evaluate and build a top team of procurement talent in all roles with true career paths and a robust succession plan

  • Own the professional development of the next generation of procurement leaders for the Company.

  • Develop and execute the appropriate category-based sourcing strategies based on the purchasing requirements of the Company. Certain categories should be sourced as commodities while others are strategic and should be approached from a total cost of ownership perspective.

  • Develop deep relationships with key suppliers truly strategic to the success of the business.

  • Actively work to appropriately reduce the number of suppliers being used by the Company while ensuring that the Company maintains robust competition within all categories.

  • Lead the effort to create a long range cost/demand assumption forecast. Use of predictive analytics to forecast future purchasing demand requirements versus past purchasing history.

  • Create deeper understanding of supplier economics and market dynamics to help Republic Services address total cost of ownership (TCO) opportunities and to set aspirational cost savings targets.

  • Lead the execution of complex deals that represent significant risk/opportunity for the Company. Lead senior management discussion around procurement, be the face of the procurement function, set the agenda, communicate with key stakeholders and ensure senior leadership is aware of progress/roadblocks and results

  • Drive innovative solutions, from restructuring supplier relationships to reengineering spend (demand management), with an overall goal of increasing value creation while appropriately streamlining spend.

  • Provide leadership and management to the organization, ensuring the right people are in the right roles.

  • Increase coordination between internal departments to enhance profits by managing expenses more effectively.

  • Understand field operations to develop and maintain strategic alliances with field leaders and key stakeholders to drive procurement category spend savings.

  • Define and implement best-in-class processes and supporting technology to improve efficiencies, analytics, reporting and compliance.

  • Enhance the sourcing policies and help define enforcement approach with senior leadership.

  • Work with HR, Finance, Operations and other key stakeholders to clearly define decision rights across the enterprise.

  • Create an effective supplier management approach to drive innovation and growth, as well as on-boarding of new suppliers, quality controls and continuous improvement from the supply base using lean/Black Belt fundamentals.


  • Undergraduate degree required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.

  • Vast experience in achieving +$100 million procurement cost take out per year in a large, geographically dispersed, distributed leadership, multi-business environment.

  • Experience in a large-scale Procurement leadership role demonstrating strong technical and analytical skills and a track record of delivering on savings targets and working in a team-based environment. A true procurement expert.

  • Extensive knowledge of strategic sourcing methodologies and/or category management processes at the cutting edge of sophistication.

  • Able to work across all segments of the Procurement value chain – (sourcing, contract management, procure-to-pay, eSourcing, vendor risk management, vendor management, etc…).

  • Experience managing a +$3 Billion addressable procurement spend

  • Experience leading major projects and change programs that have positively impacted the business.

  • Experience transforming a procurement organization across a long an organizational maturity model.

  • Excellent negotiation experience and can represent the company’s interests in interactions with suppliers and third parties at the highest levels. The ideal candidate has successfully led complex negotiations in high stakes situations with significant consequences.

  • Proven experience in developing deep supplier partnerships and in consolidating suppliers across a distributed organization.

  • Experience in complex, distributed industries with network operations and a strong customer centric focus. Able to partner with senior leadership to execute complex programs enabled through sourcing.

  • Exceptional management/team leadership skills evidenced by a track record of success leading enterprise-level cost initiatives requiring coordination of cross-functional team members with varied backgrounds and skills.

  • A demonstrated ability to think strategically and act as a thought partner with peers, senior leadership, and key stakeholders is critically important. The successful candidate is a master at synthesizing unrelated ideas to identify the optimal solution and develop a coherent plan or vision. The ideal candidate is able to capture this vision through exceptional tactical execution.

  • Demonstrated experience using superior quantitative and analytical capabilities along with the ability to translate analysis into management insights, actions and results using procurement and vendor data, as well as supply market insights.

  • Proven ability to oversee an effective supplier management program.

  • Knowledge of economics and trends in the relevant direct and indirect supply markets.

  • Experience leading the implementation of strategic sourcing and procurement systems and tools to deliver effective management reporting and compliance tracking.

  • Able to lead Six Sigma and/or Black Belt initiatives.

  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to effect strategic direction.


  • Bachelor’s degree Required

  • 10 years’ experience leading Procurement Function

  • 5 years’ of proven experience leading an effective suppler development program
